how to set up a planting light

i know this is a stupid question but i seee the light bulbs in the store without some sort of cover, and want to know how it works. do you just attach the light to the tank or is there a thing to put it onto

What do you mean by light bulbs in the store?
Are you talking about light units hanging over aquariums, or lights in the ceiling of a building, or something else?

Im guessing you mean the tube lamps, you will need to find out the length and the bulb size (e.g. t5, t8) then get the appropriate fixture for it.

The light globes have to be put into a light unit. The light unit rests on top of the tank or gets suspended above it if you want to make a frame up for that. The light unit gets plugged into a power socket and the light comes out of the globe.
