Add a few inches of sand/ gravel to a 10 or 20 litre bucket.
Use a garden hose to squirt the sand and wash it about. Do this until the bucket is about half full of water.
Tip the dirty water out and squirt more water into the bucket.
Do this a few times until the substrate looks clean.
Put the clean gravel in another bucket and repeat the process until it has all been cleaned.

Do a complete gravel clean in the aquarium on the day before you change the substrate in the tank.
The day after the gravel clean, use a net to scoop the old gravel out and put it in buckets. When it has been removed, add the new gravel/ sand.
