i normally use a pipe to suck the water out of the tank. However, no matter how careful i am, there are always shrimplets sucked out as well. it cost ages to try to spot them and get them back to the tank. how can i suck the dirt out without the baby shrimp

Place a piece of women's tights over the end of the pipe that goes in the water and secure with an elastic band or fishing line.

no, you can not do that, i tried. you only can get water out, but all the dirt still stay there

How about cutting up an old net and using a rubber band to attach it? Should be small enough to keep the shrimp out and large enough to suck the poop out.

Good idea, now i have to find a old net

Start the siphon in an area where there are no shrimp, then put your thumb over the outlet that is in the bucket to stop the flow. You can now use your thumb to vary the flow, if you see shrimp heading up the tube, stop or slow the siphon so they can escape.

I do this with angel fry tanks, a piece of air line tubing tied to a dowel, with a little flow adjustment with my thumb.
