How to get rid of green algue?

There are Alternanthera family plants commonly grown as garden annuals for summer. They will as cuttings survive for a couple of weeks underwater..but zero growth,just a slow drowning death. Anyways,those garden plants look very much like the A. reineckii we all now know and love.
