I bought some Purigen made by seachem and that cleared my water up a bit but would the best thing to do be like a drastic 75% water change because I have tried everything. What would be the cause of this. I change my water and it clouds up again. I can see particle but all liqiud clarifiers dont do anything. Could this be a bacteria bloom or is my glass dirty? Substrate is ADA Amazonia.

Could be a bacterial bloom. Whats your water stats?

How long has the tank been running? Have you added any livestock recently?

It has been running since august or july and I have not added livestock except for plants. Iadded driftwood but the water was cludy before I added that.

Easy enough to check if it is the glass - wipe the glass with something and see if this helps. To check if it is the water get a clear glass and put some tank water in it - if the water is the cloudy source then you'll be able to tell easily enough.

Cloudy water can be a bacterial bloom - if it is then it should clear itself after a short while, though frequent ~25% water changes should help things along the way a bit more quickly. If it has a green tinge to the cloudiness then this is more likely an algae bloom which would need a different approach.

anyone? I did a water change and it looks clearer but it always does and then gets cloudy again. Also can to much substrate be bad I read somewhere that it keeps in more dirt but in a planted tank wouldnt more substrate be a plus and no matter how much substrate you have only the top is going to collect it unless it sinks Am I right wouldn't more be better?

Green tinge = algae = filter stuff etc won't help long term unless you can find the root of the problem.

Do you mean there is something wrong with my filter it is only an aquaclear or do you mean stuff the filter with wool.
Also how long should I do a black out and will it kill my plants?

Sorry to hear about your water being cloudy. I have 3 plant tanks with no merky water. Here is a suggestion. If you use activated cabon in a nylon bag it will help. Also there used to be a product called Diatamateous earth. What this is is a white powder that you put in your filter. Such as a outside canister filter with a fine screen. What this does is the filter sucks the powder into the filter and it attaches itself to the screen. the powder is so microscopic that the smallest of particles cannot escape. Thus leaving your water very clean. Diatamatrous earth is actually microscopic shells from prehistoric times. It is used in the filter industry to filter water. Where do you get it? I'm sorry to say I don't know but I will look it up for you. I actually have some from many years ago and I'm still using it. Is has never failed me yet. I,m hoping someone selse will see this post and give you some more information. I used liquid clarifiers and they didn't work.
