How To Build Moutain/hill

I have seen that some people have a very high hill/mountain one end of the tank, I also saw maidenhead aquatics do that as well in one of their tanks. do you just have more/loads of substrate one end or do you put something else underneath then just top it off with substrate, hope im explaing myself correctly.

as im getting a new tank in january im looking to try a new scape

you can do it either way i guess. personally i did mine with just sand and then put some terries (not sure if spelt right) in to hold it back

I was thinking of making a platform out of egg crate to do something like this, would also provide a cave too.
Could be a bit of work to get it looking just as nice though.
