I have 5 of these little guys I love them. They are the only fish in a 20gal long they share the tank with shrimp that's it. I want to breed them. I have bred bronze Cory cats before easy. How do I put these fish in the mood? The tank is planted it use to be very heavy planted but I moved things around and sold some plants. So now the tank needs to fill in but will have lots of plants.

The temp is low 73F ph is low 6.5. I would think they would be happy to breed but I have only seen them flirt no real spawning. Maybe lots of cool WC? or should I make a black water mix with peat moss?

What are ways to breed these fish?

Here is a photo just because they are so darn cute.

I fed my pygmys defrosted mini bloodworm & baby brine shrimp, with cold water changes that triggered them off :)

I have live blackworms. My other Cory cats go crazy for them. I just thought they might be kind of long for them to eat. I will try feeding them a little bit. I think I will do WC with cool RO water more often.

Hi snowflake311 :)

I just thought they might be kind of long for them to eat.

Don't hesitate to take a knife and chop the worms into smaller pieces for them. I've used razor blades to chop the worms into tiny bits for young fish. It makes them grow out faster than any other food I've tried.

As far as getting your fish to spawn, this time of year is kind of off season for them. Once (our) fall comes, Corys seem to spawn everywhere with much less trouble. If you're not in a big hurry, have a little patience and see what happens naturally. :)

Thanks inchworm you are like the Cory godmother. I see now the season is off. I have been looking to up my Pygmy Cory population and can't get any. I will wait get the tank ready for them. Yuk cutting up worms I will give it a try I am sure they will love them. I am so happy my lfs has blackworms now.

By fall my tank should be all filled in I am growing a few different types of moss that needs to grow in. In fall I will try really hard go get them to breed. They should also be a year old by fall.

This tank is plamted for dawrf Cory cats and shrimp only. So I hope some will get in the mood. My shrimp are doing well lots are berried right now.

A little off topic how much should I spend on skunk corys? My lfs only had 2 left and I wanted to get some more. I got these 2 for $4 each. The other store had them for $7 per fish. After all these years I still love Cory cats. My 80 gal planted tank is slowly going to the cory cats haha. Best little fish ever.
