my gravel is about 1 an 5 iches then hill to abot 4 iches back down to 1 an 5 iches

my tanks a 30 litre tank
30cm w
40 h
33 d

do i have to much gravel to less What?

I have sand in mine and its about 1" (maybe a bit more) at the front and graduates to about 2-2.5" at the back, thats in a 37ltr tank
it would probably be about the same if i had gravel
In my honest opinion i think you have too much, but thats solely my own prefererence, theres proabably no right or wrong :good:

thanks 4 ur advice my gravel is a mix of black, white, blue and green it looked good but i think ur right because i have looked at other peoples aquarisms and they dont have it as thick as mine.

if i got sand instead would it be easyer or harder to clean because i got one of those hover things

It's about the smae to clean, you just have to use a different technique. Some people swirl the sand around with their finger, then siphon it up, others hold the siphon about an inch over the sand and it will be picked up.

i siphen just above my sand. personally i think sand is better as muck just sits on top, whereas with gravel it can ease its way through, therefore you need to clean all throughout it. thats from experience anyway.

i should of got sand gravel takes ages to clean expesly the amount a have

do u think fishes perfer sand or gravel and would sand be ok for a apple snail.

well ive only ever used gravel with goldfish but i should imagine fish would prefer sand anyway as its more like thier natural environment.
Also one of my goldfish once got a piece of gravel stuck in its mouth, which i had to gently ease out with tweezers and it was left slightly deformed  so i personally wouldn't use gravel again

thanks but do u think a snail would be ok with sand because me snail likes to slice along gravel

i'm not sure as i don't have snails, but i'm sure i've heard somewhere on here they are perfectly fine with it :good:

my gravel and sand in my tanks are both about 1 inch thick. (just to be clear, I have gravel in 2 tanks, and sand in 2 tanks, I dont have both mixed in any tank)

snails are fine with sand, the MTS are the most common snail for sand tanks as they dig under it.in my gravel tank, its about 1inch think all across, as its difficult to clean because the gravel vac had to be pushed into the gravel to suck up the crap.i also personally think you have too much gravel, but its your choice. ive recently swaped gravel for sand in another tank, it looks more natural and i think my ottom dwellers will like it more. i havent cleaned it yet, but i will try holding the vacumm just above the sand.its a personaly prefrence to what you have in your own tank, gravel and sand both have pros and cons, it depends on what fish and what techniques you are using.both look great to me.

I use small gravel in all my tanks with the lowest point being about 3/4 inch and the deepest being around 3 inches deep. It all really depends on whether your tank is planted and what your personal preferrence is. My deeper gravel is where I have my Amazon Sword and other heavily rooted plants at, so it serves a big purpose for me, although sand is an even better substrate when working with plants if you use chemical fertilizers. I prefer gravel because it's fun to watch all my fish clean it :good: . They're awful little scavengers lol.
