He folks,

I bought 3 female and one male guppy at the weekend, unfortunately 2 of the females have died and left me with one which is pregnant.

Here is a picture of her here, ignore her tank mates.

The questions I have are:-
  • How pregnant is she?
  • Should I segregate her in a birthing tank just now incase the male harasses her?
Thanks

She probably has a week or two to go.  How are you planning to keep the fry once they are born?  Do you have a separate tank you are planning to rear them in?  Your goldfish is likely to eat any babies your guppy may have... and possibly still after a couple months of growth.

Can I ask why you keep a goldfish in what looks like a tropical tank?

I had initially planned on putting the guppy into a birthing box as she was about to give birth and then keep the fry in there until a decent enough size, I did think that the goldfish would pose a problem.

The goldfish was rescued by a friend, and I then took him as he was emptying his tank, I couldn't see a healthy fish get flushed. His neighbour had it in a pond in his garden. The guy died and the local council came round and to fill in the pond and and dumped all the fish on the grass. The goldfish was the only survivor. I've had him about two years now and he doesn't bother with any of the other fish.

the goldfish deserved that help.
i think your guppy will be fine. just not her fry. i think you will need another tank for them

How big is your tank? I would put the goldfish in a separate, cold water tank unless you have a 30/40 gallon tank to let it grow. Your female looks about 2 weeks along, I have had many a female die in a breeder trap due to stress. I let mines have them in the main tank and then separate them. I caught 20 fry on tuesday! they are now in their own tank. This is usually due to me getting it wrong and missing the drop lol

No more pregnant guppy. Thats all 3 gone now, the shop I got them from couldn't care less. Won't be going back there. They tried to blame my water, which I had checked before I bought the fish. All other fish I bought are fine so it couldn't have been the water anyway.

What were the symptoms of the dead fish? Had you put her in the breeder box?

What did they say was wrong with your water? Was there ammonia?

I didn't have her in the breader box at the time but her tail started to go white, which was similar to the other two guppies that died earlier in the week.

I had my water tested before I bought the fish, through a different pet shop, they didn't give me the parameters or anything like that but mentioned that it was good quality.

You may want to call around at local fish stores and ask if they test strip the water or use the liquid kit. One of mine a petland uses the liquid kit and that's what u need to go on. Strips are not the way to go. U can buy the liquid kit at any store but it is pricey. But it last a very very VERY long time and will give u peace of mind that u KNOW nothing is wrong or you will KNOW exactly what needs to be fixd.

I'm sorry for your losses and my heart is warmed about the goldfish. As time goes on try to keep in mind that the goldfish has no stomach in which it produces an extreme amount of ammonia compared to your other tropical fish. Maybe you can get a tank just for it. I know every 6 months petco has a dollar per gallon sale on tanks. I think its coming up next month :3
