How Often Should I Protein Skim?

i want to know because my protein skimmer is noisy so if i could have it off for like the time i have the lights on (8 hours) that'd be gr8 and wouldnt it actually benefit my new pulsing xenia
?

its a boyu one and it seems to work effectively in my 30 gal with only 3 small fish.

thanks (oh and my nitrates are still quite high will it not help if i put the skimer on a timer?)

you should skim all the time
it would benefit the coral to skim 24/7

the only time i ever tun my protein skimmer off is when i add phytoplankton or marine snow to the water to feed the corals, this is normally done twice a week and stops the skimmer making do with the suspended coral food before the corals have chance to gt at it...
