Twelve hours is usually too much. Rule of thumb is about eight hours maximum and less if you're having algae problems.

I've recently brought two timers for my tanks. As I'm not home much in the morning the lights don't come on until 12:30pm and then I get to enjoy them till 8:30pm when the lights turn themselves off. Maybe a solution? You could possibly have yours on later and off later.
