I have a 55 gallon and it is topped out on the 1 inch per 1 gallon rule. How often should I be doing water changes. Lets say at the very least.....

Thanks

some say at least once every two weeks, but i think once every week is the ideal one. oh, and change no more than 20 % of the water.

I would go along with revengeishere, however I would also like to say, it depends how many fish you have in your tank. If the tank is overloaded, as many of ours are I'm sure, then a 25% every week would be recommended. If your tank is relatively new and you don't yet have too many fish then a 25% WC every 2 weeks is acceptable. A lot also depends on the type of filtration you have and what you have as your filtration media. Think of it this way, a water change is like giving yourself a shower and a breath of fresh air. Remember a fish's environment is water, ours is air so refreshing the water every so often is like someone refreshing our natural air. Fish look up to us from their environment into the big expansive world of ours. To the fish, we are the pooli-verse, just like us looking up beyond our world into the uni-verse. Just that things are on a different scale.

I do nitrate tests twice a week and change the water if the nitrate is reading over 40ppm (which it nearly always is :*) ) .I change about 15 -20% twice a week but my fish are big and messy so you would probably only need to do yours once a week.

Thanks guys. I was afraid of that. I have only been doing water changes once every two weeks and for a while there only once every 3. I knew I wasn't doing it enough, but I wanted to make sure. I will try to do it every Sunday and 25% it is :)

Thanks again,
