How Often Do You Need To Change Filter Media?

Just got my new tank and i hav'nt even cycled it yet so i suppose it is a little early to worry about it but i was just wondering how often you need to change filter media?

It is a Fluval 305 external filter. My tank wont be over stocked and it is 295l. (120Lx43Wx63H)

If its the right size then I wouldn't worry too much.

I only rinse the media every month and am not planning to change any until it gets clogged (which it is nowhere near after 3 months in the tank)

At which point I shall buy some pond sheets of foam and cut them to size (much cheaper and you will get 3 or 4 refills in this size filter)
