Filter media sponge?

Get a bucket of tank water and wash it in that and put the filter back.
Then replace the bucket of water with fresh in the tank.

this should be done weekly.

Do you have an internal filter or an external?. For an internal, I'd do it twice a month, during a water change. Just swish it about in a bucket of old tank water. If you have an external, there's no need to clean it until you notice that the return flow into the tank is slowing down. I haven't cleaned mine for a good two months.

Filter cleaning depends on the filter, tank size, stocking, and feeding. Generally, when the flow starts to slow down the filter is due for a clean.

The main point is never wash the sponge in tap water.

Always use water from the tank. Frequency varies from tank to tank, but there is no point washing it unless it restricts the flow through the filter.
