Well, my mutt tanks are basically tanks where my guppies and endlers (also other livebearers) are moved to that don't meet up the characteristics of the strain sufficiently. In those mutt tanks, they're allowed to crossbreed. It's my surprise tank. For it's always a surprise what offspring will come out.

In those mutt tanks, they're allowed to crossbreed. It's my surpise tank. for it's always a surpise what offspring will come out.

I figured it was a "cull" tank, but still! It still means you love these fish, and even if they don't make the cut for line breeding, you let them live out their lives with you, or crossbreed and be sold as mutts, but they're going to much heathier stock than the mutts stores are selling!

I also like the surprise of breeding mutts, and never quite knowing what you're going to get, so watching them grow and develop unexpected colours or tail shapes is pretty fun.

There are a lot of breeders who cull and euthanize the ones that don't make the cut. While actually, culling doesn't mean killing. But only separating them from the desired ones. I rather set up another tank than killing those fish. And basically, they're not bad quality. They just don't meet up my demands sufficiently in order to go on in the linebreeding process. And at some point, such tanks will become crowded. So, those undesired ones will be sold or even donated to keep the numbers in such tanks down to a realistic number. And I'm fortunate that there are stores who are willing to have them from me. I don't have to offer them to those stores. The stores ask me if I have something to offer.

it's only a mutt if you say it is. Otherwise, it is a selectively bred, carefully curated, artisan, small batch guppy. You can slap those garbage marketing terms on it, give it a special name, put it in a tank by itself and presto! Very rare, highly prized....
....btw I have some snake oil that cures just about anything if you're interested.
