Finally got the 4 footer off my other half currently sitting empt in the livingroom . My question is how much sand am i going to need ? It's 4 foot in length by 1.5Ft in width . I estimated at 5 bag's simply because it took me 2 bag's to fill my 42G and this is 112G so 2 1/2 times bigger. The bag's of sand are 15Kg each and 75G seems like a bit to much lol

Anyone shed some light?

:D

i have a tank with identical surface area. I put in 60 kilos i believe but 75 would've been better as a bit deeper bed makes it less probably you'll have open areas on the bottom.

don't look at tank volume if you compare to another tank, look at surface area.
you 112g is 6 sq. feet. compare that with your 42 gallon and see!

my 2 foot tank only needed just less than 10kg, so.... x2...

you will need 20kg with some to spare.!

112 gallons? my 4 foot tank is only 63 gallons, and it only took a bag and a half of toysrus play sand...

yup 4x1.5x3 works out at 112G on the calculator up the top of the page. Will get some pic's of it up shortly once sand settles a bit still abit cloudy lol

I used 2 x 25kg bags of sand to get 2" of depth in my 5x2ft tank. I don't think any more depth is recommended, in fact most seem to say that 1.5" is the most you should have....not sure why though.

if you get a deep sand bed, 3 inches or more, you rune the chance of getting anaerobic bacteria that will produce gas pockets in the sand if this gas is lethal to the fish if it accumulates and is released all at once.

malaysian trumpet snails stir up the sand so prevent this from hapenning. stirring the sand on a regular basis will also prevent this.

in all honesty though, two inches is usually more than enough!
