How Much Salt Do I Add

In my experience i always mix it before adding it to the main tank. I just get an inexpensive water pump to circulate where its being mixed. I would buy a cheap plastic storage container for about 10 dollars that holds around 32 gallons and fill it up and mix it there. You can buy it in any amount of gallons you like as long as you have room for it. Also depending on the company you are buying your salt from the dosing tends to differ slightly. Hope this has helped you saved time and money in ways you mix your salt.

spot on advice

I mix mine in a 25 litre tub as thats what I mix every week for changes.

With the powerhead I have in there and an old heater I leave it mixing for a day or two as I find the reading is only acurrate after a full days mixing

you should never mix the salt in a tank that has living aninmals in.
salt is very caustic and can burn the fish and other livestock badly.

i use a spare 280 litre tank to mix up the salt and get it to temp. i have it always running with fresh saltwater in, in case of any problems.

Hi Danny
Different salt brands have different concentrates to mix to; there should be instructions in the salt bucket to tell you :p .
If not as a ball-park starting point I would say around 35g per ltr, then when its fully dissolved you can test the S.g then add a little more salt or RO if required

cheers, found the instructions for the salt, 1kg per 30l at 24 degrees should give me 1.021 sg so going with that then gonna top it up

33.3 grams per litre. = 1.021 sg :good: {I was not that far out then}

Many people mix their first batch of salt water in their new tank, there is nothing wrong in doing this :good: makes perfect sense in fact.

The rule of thumb is as John said 35g to a liter of water should give you approx 1.026 - spot on for corals
