I've got a mickey mouse platy i'm pretty confident is pregnant. I've had her about 1 week and she's been huge the entire time. I've been able to see little "eyes" in her dark spot. Yesterday I put her in one of those breeder nets which although I've heard mixed reviews about, I've had good luck with. Any idea how long it will be before she gives birth? I thought she would have a few days ago.

Pregnancy lasts about four weeks normally. Without knowing how long she has been pregnant, there is no way anyone can tell you when she will give birth. Keeping the fish in the breeder for an extended period of time might cause her to abort. Keep a watchful eye out on her.

I had trouble getting a good one. This is the best I could do.

What are we defining an extended period of time as?

I would say on wensday, personally.

How are you quantifying such a statement? There is no way you can be certain. What you have provided is a complete guess. The fish may or may not drop on Wednesday. If she is humongous, you're probably looking at within the week. When I say humongous, I mean huuuuuuge. She should look almost rectangular from behind.

Should I try and get a picture from behind then?

kribensis12, you were very close. It was actually early Thursday morning So far she's had 3 but I don't think she's quite done yet!

You'll see more fry over the week. Unless you're watching them come out one by one, my guess is you'll find some hiding in the substrate around any decorations.

I used a breeding net. I count about 20 in the net now and the Mom is now in the tank with the rest. I'd be surprised to find any more in there as I have 2 chinese loaches and a bottom-dwelling frog but there are lots of hiding places so I may be surprised by a couple late survivors!

Congratulations. I'd leave it at that with the collecting of fry unless you have plans to house a lot more in different and larger tanks. Good luck with those fry!

Congratulations... I Hav a platie that looks exactly like that and shes about to drop again in a few days..well im not sure... she gave birth to her 1st batch about 24Days ago. so im not sure when she will giv birth again...

You're probably looking for some time within the week. Four weeks is the normal gestation period.

The nice thing about Mickey Mouse Platy's is that chances are you already know plenty of disney nuts who would take some once they're old enough to be transferred! I'm personally planning on holding onto the majority of mine but still know I could have plenty of good homes for them if need be.
