as a rule of thumb, how big of a filter would you advise for a 150ltr tank.iv heard of 2x the amount of flow and again 4x the amount meaning 600ltr an hour flow.bigger is best i think but i would like some advise as im only a beginner.

The way i look at it is if the filter says its for a fifty gallon tank and thats what i have, i grab one for double my tank volume. Wont work as well for my new 125 gal but i will have 3 filters running on it. Hope that helps! Good luck.

My 30 gallons original filter was rated at 200 gph, so a 6 1/2 times turnover. Most people say to aim for about 10 times turnover. In the case of a 150 liter a 1200-1500 lph filter should do just dandy.

MOF only plant people recommend a 10X filter and that is to prevent the high tech chemicals from causing excessive algae problems due to poor circulation in some areas. In general people and manufacturers are closer to a 5X figure but I will go even further. As long as you have enough biological media in your filter, you can just great ammonia conversion with no adverse effects on your fish at even 1X circulation. Many of my tanks run on simple air operated filters such as box filters and sponge filters and have done so for many years. I never see any adverse effects in those tanks and I seriously doubt the darned filters can even produce that 1X value that I gave. I do not dose huge amounts of CO2 or chemical fertilizers in those tanks but I do grow plants in them, like this tank as an example. It runs very high light levels and no artificial CO2 but is otherwise just fertilized by fish waste and excess food that rots in the tank at the substrate.

i picked up an APS 2000 secondhand for £25 that only needed new hoses for £8 , serious bargain , and seriously overspecced for a 170 l tank , water is clean though , and that is the main thing :good:
