hi everyone. just wondered how much everyone spends a month/year on the aquariums. i havent got mine up and running yet, but i will be running 2x54w t5's, a 300w heater, a 21w external filter. my charge is around 8p per kw/h. i havent worked mine out exactly yet but i think around £350 a year. hopefully the wife wont go mad :)

What volume is your tank?

Assuming it is around 300 litres and you have lights on for 10 hours per day, you can expect electricity to cost about 135 pounds per year.

To calculate how much one item of equipment uses, multiply the wattage by the number of hours it is on per day, by 365 days in a year and divide by 1000 for the kWh. To get price, just multiply by the cost per kWh.

Having said that, I estimated that the heater will be on for 10 hours per day, but I am currently measuring the power consumption of mine and it has been on for less than 5 minutes per day as it's quite warm right now and the lights heat the water during the day.

its a 385 litre tank. the house is a new type of air tight eco house. the house is very warm and doesnt even need heating. hopefully i wont need the heater on to long. how do you measure how much its using, is there some sort of adapter that plugs into the socket to tell you how much is used per day?

Yes, I'm using something which is similar to a Kill-A-Watt, my electricity company loans them to people for free.

There shouldn't be *that* much difference between 300 and 385 litres, 385 should still be 10h or under.

£0.05 per day

We spend roughly £25 per week in the summer on the whole houses electricity, £30 in the colder months

When your talking that ammount of cash in general I think a tank will be very little extra.

If it is tanks only, on top of what you normally spend it's norminal. Most tank equipment is low voltage. Owning a Dog or Cat is far moore expensive? and less enviormently friendly.

some of my tanks are 28/29 degrees.

I plead the 5th. The air pump for my fishroom pulls a constant 80w.
