How Much Do Lfs's Normally Buy Fish In For?

Your asking questions that no one really has answers 2, LFS differ for what they pay for differnt fish in different areas, kribs for instance are as cheap as £2.95 by me but there are also shops that sell them for £10-£12 a pair.... giving a price is not relevent if they can source the stock themselves and often prices will be less, if they have them in stock all the time .. prices will be less, if they sell them often .. prices will be less, if they have stock already .. prices will be less.

So many different factors on what YOUR lfs will give, mine would prob give less becasue of there selling price.

Why dont you just go ask them?, they may not take them at all, they might take everythink you breed, WE/US members of this forum cant give answers for shops in your area.

If you are lucky you get store credit for Kribs, max price about 50p each here. Many LFS will not take them here either.

LFS will NOT buy fish off you for the same it pays from wholesalers, because
- It's convenient getting in all the fish at once
- They can order exactly what they need, when they need it, and the supply is constant.

TBH, you'd be lucky to get a few cents for them. And here's the clincher.
You've got a nice big tank to breed your kribs in. Great start. BUT - a healthy breeding pair of kribs will spawn every 2 months or so. When they start a new spawn, they will treat the last one like intruders. They will drive their fry away. You'll have to remove the fry or they will be killed. The fry are likely to be about 2cm long at this point. Still far, far too small to sell. You'd be extremely lucky to find a pet store that would take them at this size, let alone pay you or give you credit.

Have you got any plans in place for growout tanks? Ie tanks where you move these half grown fry? The idea is lots of food, clean water (so you're going to have to be a LOT more diligent with your water changing, and a lot more careful with your cycling and with not overstocking, than you usually are). This gives maximum growth and in maybe two or three months you will have fry that are large enough to sex and sell.

i could put them in my spare tank, until theyre 3 cm the spare tank is 30 litres maybe i could but a breeding net in to hold the fry for a while or maybe io could put them in my 240 litre (dont ask about that the eels are predators; they havent reached theyre full sizes to be predatory yet and hardly ever show theyre faces

A predatory fish is born that way, if they can fit a fish in there mouths they will eat it! simple, They may not show there face to you but that wont stop them eating while lights are out.

30 litres is to small for a possible 50x 3cm fish.

I think you need to research ...how many babies they have, what size they need to be at for selling?, and most importantly a suitable sized tank to house them for them to get to that size

This is not ment to be rude but i think your blinded by the tiny profit margin you could possibly make, to how to actually care for the fry and bring them up.

Most LFS will not take Kribs under 1.5" or unsexable so for 50+ fry you are going to need at least 1 more 100l tank with 10-15% daily waterchanges and a high quality diet.

John, please, keep fish for the joy of keeping fish, not the thought of profits. I'd set up the 110l with the kribs a lot of caves, wood and plants- make sure lines of sight are well broken and make some of the planting fairly dense - odessa barbs are not a bad choice and a BN and if you get fry then great - save a few - if not then you still have a nice active tank.

gain - loss = profit

Sure you can think you'll get fry for free off your kribs but it's a bit more involved than that. You need to feed the fry (expense1). You need a tank for the fry (expense2). You need a filter for the fry tank (expense3). You need a heater for the fry tank (expense4). On going running costs of the tank eg. water, electricity, test kits etc. (expense5). Plus any others I may have missed.

You'll have raised about 20-50 fry by the end of it all. And they'll sell for what, maybe £0.50 each if you're lucky?

Good luck.

actually its not a prob since i've got liquifry 1 and prepared flakes crused and maybe some other foods aswell on the way

(expense2). You need a filter for the fry tank

well your not going to expect me not to get one; that would be stupid (sometimes theres bargains for fry filters coz my lfs never really sell them)

(expense3). You need a heater for the fry tank

i'll get one, not that expensive IMO

my dad pays for the bills in the house so i dont really care that much -_-

also i got a free 110 litre fish tank for the kribs.

it works out good enough money in long term, since im still at high school

Also, are you going to provide a genuine receipt to the lfs so he can claim it back and write it off against his profits. Additionally, does he want to take the risk of taking unknown stock from an unknown source.

The good lfs know where their stock are from and have a full audit trail for their books. Makes much more sense for them to purchase from their wholesaler. If they take anything from you, they are simply doing you a favour and practicing good customer service.

Do LFS take the risk of buying fish from an unknown source?

I wouldnt be happy knowing the fish I was buying were bred buy (no offence meant) some kid.

How would the LFS know that they were disease free and weren't hybrids?

they would be smart and know it's a krib and look for signs of ich, velvet ect... IMO they would take them, coz i asked before and they said that they sell home bred fish for more money than fish farm wholesalers, coz they probably shuve some weird chemicals in there to make them breed often at the fish farms  and
