Doing water changes is like talking about the bible everyone has their own ideas on how to do it and when to do it. Some do it every week, some do it every month, and some do it daily. Personally I work at a fish store and recommend once a month to do a 20-25 percent change but I do mine weekly.

on my ten gallon I do two 60% water changes weekly and on my 29 I do one 50%
WC every week (mostly because its hard in the middle of winter to get my siphon out the window into the sink downstairs).

;) I know its 'wrong' but to be honest people i have never changed the water in 4 years only topping it up when i loose about 1cm from the top, I dont change the water due to only finding out about water changes about 6 months after starting to keep tropical fish. Does anyone have any views on this?

Oh i have never lost fish due to ill health just old age! :)

omg,!!! really, didnt the water gey murky and brown,

do u do water changes now?

please do water changes, its like swimming in ur own urine, they may not die bout they wont like it and wont be very happy

good luck

im not gonna have a go at u thoght coz i know how annoying it is, and i hope no one else does#!! good luck, i clean mine every couple of days,

Normally, I change 25-30% weekly, with a gravel vacuum.

Jamie, you're very lucky not to lose any fish considering you've never changed your water! Do you have live plants in the tank? I think nitrates are one thing that starts building up if you don't perform water changes, I'm not sure how much of them live plants could absorb. Have you ever tested your water for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates?

It depends on the tank and amount & type of fish. My 55 with the large plecs and 25 platys gets 30-40% once a week. 20 gal with 6 zebra danios and a bristlenose gets 20% weekly, and the 10 that I just stocked to capacity I am keeping a close eye on and am assuming that it will need twice weekly changes of at least 30%, maybe 50%.

I am kind of a freak with water tests and keeping a log book on my tanks. My wife teases me about my "chemistry set", but the way I see it all living things need fresh food, water, and air if they are expected to live a healthy, stress free life.

IT depends when i get time ussually i clean the hole tank out once a month! :shifty:

I change some water in my tanks whenever they need it.

I have tiny fry tanks that get some water changed daily, but I also have 2 grow out tanks that are a bit overcrowded with well fed young corys and they get twice a day changes. On the other hand, my community tank only gets a change once a week.

Whenever anything seems wrong, or even if I just get a funny feeling about a tank---bingo!!-- it gets a water change.
