How many cherry or amano shrimps do you think i can fit in my 72L tank.

The current stocking is:

6 Lemon Tetras
6 Harlquins
1 Julii Cory

I know i need to a few more of the cory but the others died, and he seems as happy as he was when they were alive.

So how many shrimps do think i should put in?

EDIT:Can shrimps take the algae of the glass?

Nathan

Well if you want the superior algae eater, it's the Amano Shrimp. Nope they don't clean the glass. I have 10 in my 19US gallon and think that number can easily be doubled.

Is the tank running a DIY co2, pressurised or no co2. Reason i'm asking, is if you have a lot of shrimp, and overdose your co2 (i think its near impossible to do this with diy, not sure) you could loose your shrimp quite easily.

I wouldnt get 30 in one go.. Get maybe 5 or 6, leave them a week if they are fine then get more. Also, i asked above about if you have co2 and what type if so as an overdose could be fatal for them.

Be confident in yourself, why should u CO2 overdose?? If you have it setup right u`ll be fine!

Might be an idea to add a few first check how the critters do for a week or so. lol, if u have the patients! I know i`d be shoving in the lot in a day!! :D

haha easier said than done when it's like the complete unknown - especially when you hear all these stories about DIY disasters (mix running into the tank etc etc.) and pressurised (the needle valve getting the smallest of knocks and if unnoticed can cause mass havoc and death - as well as forgetting to let the bottle warm up after being frozen for the refill). These things do happen - even to the plant pro's. So there's a very valid reason to be cautious and concerned.

I wouldn't worry about adding 30 or so to a reasonably mature tank. Shrimp in my experience are pretty robust. Unfortunately while having some fish in a holding tank, the filter bacteria died off I saw a very nasty ammonia peak, and while this killed some fish the shrimp were still very active indeed. They are not big fans of copper though-from medications/snail killers. From a bioload perspective, I don't think most people would regard them as putting a big stress on a tank.

Surely not an excuse not to add shrimp!!

What i was saying, is that the original statement, (no offense to luke-e) was not logical. You can`t not add shrimp INCASE you overdose. Hence i said, be confident in yourself, you are not going to OD. if it happens it happens lol, you can`t not add anything incase you do, lol.

IF..if, if. what is it, if my aunty had ...she`d be my uncle!!

At the end of the day that could happen at any time...its like me saying i better not go outside incase i get hit by a car! It could happen at any time, but its not a reason for me to not go outside.

anyway, i am not trying to cause an argument or stir up debate, i have made my point and i completely understand that OD is easily done, its just you can`t refrain from inhabiting your tank ...just incase...you do OD !!

Chris

I have had a similar disaster in one of my tanks where the filter broke down and the shrimp started dying. They are a very quick indicator of water chemistry IMO, if you see them all huddled together not doing anything and not moving check your water parameters straight away as there is something wrong. They should be active and scurrying about.

Apparently when setting up say a 60cm tank ADA add something in the region of 40 shrimp, reducing this number when the tank has settled down. I would say 30 is fine but as they scare me I'd err on the side of caution and go for about 20.

uhm, saying that mine have only ever all huddled behind the inlet pipe and heater guard or bogwood during the day and only scurry about when there's food or at night -_- Apart from one death (unknown) and one dried escapee, they're all still healthy alive and growing strong for many months now :flex:
Even when I had my near CO2 disaster and pH crash when the fish were flopping about, they were fine to and all survived.
