Hello,

We are getting a 45l (12gal) tropical tank and want to keep the stock very simple with 2 groups of rasboras + some kind of shrimp.

what qty's would be a good stock level ???

thanks

Well you could do this:
8 Espei Rasbora or Harlequin Rasboras
8 Hengeli Rasboras
5 Chystal Red Shrimp :good:

As Carl says OR, you could have bigger numbers of Galaxy Rasboras and Chilli Rasboras in a 45L B-)

Don't you mean Celestial Pearl Danios?

Or the OP could do this:
10 Microdevario kubotai
10 Emerald Dwarf Rasbora (Microrasbora erythromicron)
6 Green Neon Shrimp
(note how I like to suggest unusual species :shifty: :p :hey: )

or would it look better for 1 larger school of the same fish as opposed to 2 smaller..

Well in my opinion, in a heavily planted tank, 2 seperate species of shoaling fish looks better but in a more empty tank (like an Iwagumi tank), 1 big species of shoaling fish looks good. Thats just my perspective, some people will disagree.

Would Red Claw Crabs be compatable with Crystal Red Shrimp ??

Definitely not, Red Claw Crabs should be kept in Brackish conditions, not freshwater, and the crabs would more than likely eat the shrimp.

In a 45 Litre I'd go for 1 shoal but that's my take on thing, you could easily do 2 shoals of 10 small cyprinids/characins, and a centre piece fish, but that would look a bit crowded in my opinion, in smaller tanks taking a less is more approach is normally a better idea.

Cheers for the info,

I think I will probably go for 15 Rasboras + 4 Crystal Red Shrimp.

I’m hoping to get the Biorb Life 45 portrait and want a simple contemporary look ????

Personally, I wouldn't go for a biorb, for the same price you could get yourself an optiwhite tank, and a decent filter, you could go for a standard 45 litre Clearseal rectangular tank, I know the BiOrbs are appealing, but the lighting is poor and so is the filtration, and fast swimming fish such as Rasbora's will prefer longer tanks as they are active fish and will appreciate the more lateral space.

I hear what your saying but I really don’t like the "conventional" tanks, shallow I know ! I want something different and the Life ticks the boxes....

What would be a suitable replacement for the rasboras, i want something small so that i can keep 15ish and something vibrant...

You'd never know that im new to tropical tanks would you !!

Don't rule out rasbora's completely, those from the Boraras genus would do just fine as they reach a maximum size of 2cm, Ember tetra's and Celestial Danio's are nice too.

Im open to suggestions,

I obviously want a healthy tank and happy fish :
