How Many Neon Tetras???

You also have to worry about having enough aeration at night especially if you have that many fish in a planted tank. I am looking at adding some more at night to make sure there is enough oxygen in the water since I have a heavily planted tank.
I actually added a sponge to baffle my Aqua Clear because it flows so strong. The sponge filter puts out a lot of aeration too. I can remove the extra sponge in the Aqua Clear if I need to for more flow. :)

As you have an HOB aeration should not be a problem. In my community tank I have put airstones in either corner. This is for two reasons:
  1. The corys love playing in the bubbles (FWIW peppers will use more of the tank space than many others
  2. As you may have noticed there is a bit of frogbit on the surface which means I don't get a lot of water movement on the surface without them

Well, if they love the bubbles, I may have to put an air stone in. :)

If you have live plants and they are growing, and especially surface plants, you cold add all the fish at once and you would never have ammonia above zero. But only you can tell about the plants. It is always better to add the entire group of a species because they will settle in much faster the more there are, which means less stress and less likely ich will break out.

As for the surface disturbance,an HOB is more than enough of this. Too many bubblers and you risk driving out needed CO2 during the day.

Good to know. Thanks so much!

Sounds good, I am looking at adding a large bubble stone at the center of my tank, I have air left tubes on each end for the UGF but I do not feel comfortable adding more fish without the additional aeration.
I'm basically on the same lines as others, sort of. If you only want neon tetras and cories, I would increase the cories to 20-25 (assuming this is a 4-foot tank). And you could easily do 70-100 neon tetras. Don't need that many, but the option is there. Also assuming floating plants. If you want other species, 20-30 neons, depending what other species. Cories are substrate fish basically, and neons tend to be mid-lower level. So you will have the upper 1/3 to 1/2 of the water empty with just these two. Hatchetfish? You have the space for a good group of the larger species, like the beautiful Platinum (Thoracocharax stellatus).
@Byron I looked at these but it appears they need 82F temp. Too warm for my tetras and cories. Any top level that can live in 75F???
