Hey whats up all,
Im setting up a 20 gallon long saltwater fish tank. Im wondering how many fish i could fit. Im planning to put 2 perculur clownfish, a yellow tang, and a blue tang, starfish, and some cleaner shrimp or wrasses. Can u plz tell me if i could put more or how many i can or shold put in it.
Also can i put coral?
Thanks,
Robert

i have one clown, one yellow tang, one algae blenny and one tiny damsel in 50 gallon. i don't plan to buy anymore fish (it might be a little cramped already)imo. to have that many fish in a 20 gallon tank would be pushing it. especially the tangs, they love lots of space. if you want that many fish, you should really consider a bigger tank. saltwater fish need space. you can however, definetly do coral but then you must consider lights. metal hailide for hard coral, power compact or vho will suffice for soft coral. if you havent already, please try to read the pinned article on saltwater fish and setting up a new tank. good luck to ya!!! jim. :D

also if i get like a 40 gallon and i put some clowns and tangs in would an eel be able to live in with them or would they kill eachother?
Can u give me some good websites of some skimmers and filters.
Thanks,
Robert

As Jimmdog has mentioned, Tangs need space. I would not consider putting a Tang in anything less than 100 gallons (UK... approx 130 US gallons).

In the wild a tangs teritory is literally miles in length and they will easily swim it during day. 20 gallons is far too small for these fish. Tangs are also very easy to stress (probably due to the fact they have so little room even in large home aquariums) and with this stress comes whitspot. If you keep tangs in 20 or 40 gallon tanks then whitespot will be your worst enemy, this in turn will be a real threat to wiping out the entire tank. You are better off scrapping any idea for tangs and opt for a dwarf angel (Perhaps a Cherub Angel) as their teritories are far far smaller in the wild.

ok so u cant fit any fish in a fish tank wtf is the fish tank for then???? i think 4 fish would do just fine maybe not 2 tangs but i think four fish would b fine :sly:

Basically its like trying to keep an Eagle in a budgie cage. Keeing a tang in a tank that is more than 5 times smaller than the recomended size is asking for trouble It is cruel, it will stress the fish and have a hhigh risk of causing disease or further stress to the rest of the tank.

We keep fish tanks to house fish that are suitable for a tank of this size. Clown have small territories and thus wont mind as much by being houses in a tank that is closer to their natural living requirments. Housing a fish is cramped conditions is a waiting disaster. Keeping a fish out of ignorance is somewhat forgivable (evenif the research should have been done first) but to keep a fish in conditions that will stress it in the full knowledge that its u nsuitable is totally irrisponsible.

to break over the head of somone who wants to put 408534598435 fish in it...

i have been researching nanos for sometime now and will probably be starting one within a few months. if i am to even get any fish, they will be 1 or 2 small gobies.

you cant overload on saltwater fish like you can with freshwater fish.

yellow tangs are absolutely my favorite sw fish and someday i would like a 200 gal with nothing but yellow tangs :) i certainly wouldnt put one in anything under 100g.
:)
