How Many Females?

How many females should you put in with a fighter to breed? Will he focus on and possibly kill a single female VS spreading his 'affection' amongst say 3-4?

I used 1 female, but generally stayed home to watch them during the breeding so that they didn't try to murder each other. I have only rarely heard of multiple females being used.
