Hey guys.

I'm wanting to upgrade to a 90 - 120 litre tank when I come back from New York, but (as the tank will be in my bedroom) I'm worried about the noise. Having tried an internal filter in the 90 litre work tank (and not being impressed), I definitely want an external filter.

Does anyone have any recommendations for quite externals (if there is such a thing) or good ways to sound proof?

many of them are very quiet, but it will ultimately depend on how sensitive you are to noise.

I need almost complete silence to get to sleep. Even the sound of a nearby watch is enough to keep me awake :)

I have and Eheim 2217 and once inside the cabinet the internal Fluval U4 is more audible.

I have a fluval 206. Only one moving part so this leads it to e very quiet when new and with regular, thorough maintenance, it'll stay that way.

EDIT: My tank is also in my bedroom ;)

I have an APS 2000 and it is very quiet , but as said above , it depends on you a lot ....

As oppose to how many on other filters?

TetraTEC EX1200 and APS are quiet. :)

i agree with the above the rena xp3 is probably the quietest external ive had. i had to put my ear to it to see if it was still working!!!

Didn't imply there were more than one moving part on other filters. Admittedly, I'm not entirely sure where internal filters are concerned. Just making a statement

Thanks guys. So I was thinking about the fluval roma 90 (90 litres). It says it comes with a fluval U2 internal, but I'm not impressed with internal filters tbh.

What would you guys recommend for a 90litre tank external filter? I can deal with a little noise as my current internal buzzes sometimes and I've gotten used to it.

Fluval 206 :good:

I have two eheims (a pro1 and a pro3) on the same tank and literally can't hear that they're running, have to look at the flow from the spray bars to check they're ok.

A lot of noise from filters doesn't come from the filters themselves but from resonances in the cabinet, doors, lids etc. If you put some rubber or foam under the filter, felt pads on the corners of doors, make sure wires arn't rattling against the inside of the stand and things like that you can considerably reduce the noise of a tank.

an Eheim classic 2215 would work well on a 90 litre tank and leave a bit of capacity for future tank upgrades.
