If I did indeed kill off my bacs, how long will it take to start colonising again, the same as last time or longer, I admit to getting impatient now, in fact angry that I may have caused this. Stupid stupid stupid!!! lol so I was wandering how do I figure out if the cause of the problem is still in my tank...

Well I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. The two species of bacteria we grow are present in virtually all tap water all over the earth, so a few can always be expected to be at the ready to start up a colony (which is why fishless cycling can just start from the tap) as long as you take away the chlorine-based inhibitors and ideally bring the temp up to 29C/84F and hopefully have a pH closer to the 8.0 to 8.4 range. The bacteria also need a little calcium and a tiny bit of iron but both of those should be available in the tap water itself except under rare conditions. From your description of your clean-out event, it still didn't sound to me as if you'd destroyed all the bacteria (the dechlored tap water you left the sponges in after cleaning them in tank water wasn't especially cold or hot I presume?) so I'd certainly be hopeful that your A-Bac colony would swing back up to size faster than a brand-new startup. That should mean you'd have your first significant drop from 4ppm to zero ppm in a fewer number of days than before, whatever that was. One mental trick I use is to think how I, as the smarter animal, will win out in the end because I -know- that if I keep providing the right conditions, there's *no way* those bacteria won't eventually grow! The feeling that I will eventually win helps to make be feel better while I'm being patient.

It's really frustrating isn't it, I'm going through very similar circumstances to you with my fishless cycle, and if I had any hair to waste I'd have pulled it out in clumps by now.

I'm on day 56. The first 13 days went great with Ammonia dropping to zero, and Nitrites were peaked out at 10 for a few days, then were just starting to drop. The problem was I wasn't really checking Ph as it had been stable since the start, then suddenly everything went wrong. Ammonia was back up to 2ppm after 24 hours from daily dose, the Ph had dropped to 6.0 and checking on here meant a diagnosis of bacteria stalling was reached. There was a big lump of bogwood in the tank which was the cause, so out that came and a full waterchange/cleaning etc was carried out.

The cycle started again pretty quickly, 4 more days and I was processing Ammonia down to zero after 24 hours, with Nitrites down to zero after 7 days (24 hour mark). The 12 hour measurements showed Ammonia 0.25 and Nitrites 0.5 so things were moving. Then I bought one of those plastic tree roots, you know the sort....big thing with loads of hidey holes for the fish. I obviously gave it a good wash, in ordinary tap water, and as it's hollow there was loads of lovely chlorine laced water left inside to mix into the tank  Ammonia was back up to 2ppm after 24 hours. Another water change. This was day 34 of my cycle. The ornament was removed.

It took 7 days for the ammonia to go to zero (24 hours) and the nitrites took 12 days to get to that point. the 12 hour measurements were just starting to look batter when I decided to change 20% water because there was a lot of what looked like soap suds on the surface and the nitrates were really high.

My ammonia is still processing back to zero in 24 hours, but my Nitrites have slowed right down, from zero at 24 hours to 0.5 at 24 hours. It's been like this for 4 days. (I'm laughing or else I'd cry).

How bloody frustrating is this? It sometimes seems that it's a waste of time, if I'd waited until after the cycle was finished these problems with water changes etc would still happen. So how do you finish a cycle, re-fill with nice new water, add your plants and ornaments then avoid putting your fish into what is then an un-cycled tank?

I'm always really careful with the water btw. The tap water is Ph 7.0, Amm 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 5 and I add the Tetra Aquasafe at 1.5 dose with a syringe dropper so it's spot-on.

Sorry to hijack with a long thread. I needed to get it off my chest.

Yes, frequently very frustrating. I like to think that is one of the reasons for the high level of activity in this subforum. If it all just worked the same way each time then we could simply have an article or list of steps and leave it at that. But the reality of it is such that it helps to have people to actively discuss it with.

For those who ask a lot of questions up front before they get started, we often recommend that they keep things very simple during fishless cycling and have only a substrate and nothing else for the duration, including a minimum of light. Its much, much more common though for beginners to have families involved, including kids and significant others who add some pressure to have the tank look more like it will later with fish.

Hang in there! In my earlier days of fish keeping, I stumbled a lot, but I didn't give up. Persistence and dedication are good things to have in this hobby. It definitely isn't for those who have little patience.

Very good words! "Persistence and dedication!" I think the majority of this hobby can be summed up with those words!

thanks guys. I have a lot of persistance and dedication ( called 5 kids) and my mum would say I had enough determination to be in govt. but I am finding myself getting annoyed as I am inexperienced I can't see where its going wrong, or how to correct it. I also have an autistic little 4 yr old who keeps saying fishy tunk and looking for fish that arn't there yet, its this that causes my frustration, coz I cant explain the nitrogen cycle to a handicapped 4 yr old...there got that off my chest! lol

Bless her heart! When you get fish, I bet she will be really excited though!

Yeah, shes a Darling. Her name is Lily Rose, hence my name.lol
She fell in love with the Koi in our Plantasia tropical Environment centre, which we visited and she wanted to stay to feed them...they seemed to be climbing over each other to get the food! bless
