How Long Should The Light Be On?

I am new to the fish keeping scene and I was wondering how many hours should I keep the light in the tank on during the day?

About the length of an average day - say 12-15 hours.

It can depend on how strong your lighting is though - if you leave powerful lights on for long periods it can make algae more likely.
