Voted 2-4 years, as it was about 4 years ago I started with Goldfish, and kept them until just recently - he was getting too big for the tank, so I had to donate him to another home.

So, literally about 3 weeks ago, after the Goldfish left, I have now moved onto tropicals!

Never kept tropicals before, and it is slightly different I think to coldwater (goldfish) with respects to conditions, and feeding.

not quite 6 months for me but i'm hooked real bad. i started with a 20 tall and nothing but the petco dude's advice. i know better now and i think that's why i now have a 60, 55, 20 and a 10. i live in a 1 bedroom apt so there isn't much room for more sadly. now i dream about having a house and a tank like takeski amano's altum tank.

26 years roughly. I also started with a goldfish when I was 5. Goldy lasted 21 years though!

36 long years
Seen quite a lot of changes in the hobby since then.

Seriously / informatively about a year, I've had my goldies for a year and a half(had them for 6 months before really reading up about fish).

My dad always kept fish when I was younger until I supposedly at age 3 took every one of them out of the tank to 'play'(I find this very hard to believe as I have a hard enough time catching fish with a net never mind bare hands), then he didn't have another tank until he moved out. I had goldies in a bowl on and off for the next few years.

Then when I was about 12(ish) I asked him to get me a tank and some fish, it must have been around 15 - 18 gallons with 4 fancy goldies in who's water got changed every few weeks(I knew virtually nothing about fish, I figured fish needed water and food end of). After the death of the cheesily named 'fish, chips, peas & gravy' I didn't have any fish up until last august(06). I got a black moore in a bowl as a gift, well even in my naivity I knew that was unacceptable and went and got him a 5g plastic tank & a friend, then they got upgraded a few weeks later to an 18G and 2 more friends got added, then I decided to research them a bit and realised how badly I'd been treating them.

January this year I got my first tropical tank complete with 1 3 spot gourami, 2 corys(who i still have) and a big mean geophagus. The geo went to a guy at my lfs who had a male and he ended up with ALOT of little ones. Since then I've bought 8 more tanks(5 running at the moment) and once I move I intend to get alot more, I'm hoping the new house is going to have a double utility room so I can partition it and have my own fish room :D
