I have a 168USG waiting to replace my 50USG. I want to seed the media in the new filter from the old filter.

I was thinking of filling it tonight, but I am very low on tapsafe stuff.

Does anyone know how long it takes for chlorine to evaporate?

I am not going to be putting the fish in tonight anyway, that would be tomorrow, plus seeding the filter. So it would just be tap water with 2 x 300w heaters on.

about 24hrs but there might be more than just
chlorine in your tap water so i would use a dechlorinator
just to be on the safe side

My main worry would be chloramine rather than chlorine, as chloramine doesn't evaporate. It's a compound of ammonia and chlorine (the fish keeper's worst nightmare) and will only be broken down by tap treatments.

OK thanks for that, I'll have to get some tomorrow and fill the tank tomorrow night.

Does anyone know if pond dechlor is just the same stuff and OK to use in aquariums, as I think it works out cheaper?

You can still fill the tank can't you? Just don't plumb the filter in till you've got and added the tapsafe.

yeah that will be OK mind you if your
not running you are putting you bacteria
at risk as they need running water so as long
as its on your old tank circulating your old
water it will be OK

Reason I said fill her up was I remember when I got my tank I was eager to get it filled as soon as but had to wait around 2 painful weeks as I had to give it a good clean as I got it second hand.
