My balloon mollie surprised us and gave birth to 10 fry 2 days ago. My question is why is there continuous "embellical (sp?) cord" coming out of her, breaking off, and starting again as she swims around with it not really bothering her?

I looked for articles about this, but only read of these try.... being still attached to the newborn fry after live 'birth'

Thanks. Wendy

1 betta, 2 dalmation mollies, 1 balloon mollie, 2 catfish and 10 fry!!

Hiya, firstly welcome to the forums.

I have mollies and there is always pooh popping out of them, I took this to be just how they are, as this doesn’t seem to bother mine ether are you sure it is "umbilical cord" and not just pooh?

Hi- Thanks for the welcome! Much appreciated! Re the "molllie poop," I've had them for about a month or so and never saw any excretion of anything until these 2 females gave birth the last week. I did find there's a latin name for these embilical cord type things (although I forget and it's not handy). I just wondered if anyone knew how long they'd be excreting these things and dragging them around. Just curious. -My first experience with breeding fish!

Another question, if you don't mind: THe first "litter" of ten fry I scooped up immediately and are keeping them in a separate breeding "box" in the tank. THe second litter, I scooped up one or two, but haven't been able to catch any of the others--they're too fast! I'm just hoping they're too fast also for my gang of fish in the tank to have for dinner--1 balloon mollie, 2 dalmation mollies, 2 catfish and my dear Betta! Any suggestions before they become lunch? Thanks. Wendy in New york

Well, I’m as new to this as you really Wendy I’ve only had my setup for a short time really. I'm still going to do my best to answer your questions as best I can though :) so here go's.

Q. “excreting these things and dragging them aroundâ€
A. As I say I’m not 100% sure but as they are Livebearers that it is in fact an umbilical cord you are seeing, why I go with my theory of it not being is because they have that many babes inside them I find it hard to believe they would all have there very own umbilical cord but I could stand to be corrected on this.

I will find out though because now I want to know as well, lol I’m only on my second birth of Guppies fry you see.

Q. Any suggestions before they become lunch?
A. Ok as I understand it once they reach a size of approximately 10mm, they will then be big and strong enough to get away from the predators.

When the Female is fertilized it is after around 45-60 days before she will pop them out, what I would do myself now is work out when the 45-60 days is going to be from the date she popped her last lot out, from this I would hope you will have a good idea of when she’s due (providing she has been fertilized again of course, most likely she will have been).

Take a read of this post (click here) as it is very good at giving a basic knowledge of the Mollies. I don’t really know what to suggest for the babes you would like to round up, I would be inclined to take it as some sort of happy medium and leave them as they are, if some survive so be it if not o well there is always next time.

As I understand it the Mollies give birth too much bigger fry then Guppies and so you should avoid putting the mothers in a breeding net/trap and also because the Molly is just not suited to a small space at all and can abort the pregnancy due to stress I’m afraid.

Today I have decided to setup a smaller tank I have that I can use to raise my fry in, I’m only after some small amounts of fry to be used to stock up my mates tanks as they would like them, after that I will just let nature take its coarse and leave the babes to get on with it.

This tank will also serve as a good foundation for my mollies to give birth in as well so kind of a win win really (fingers crossed), can I suggest you do the same and if not go about dividing your main tank so as to give your mollies the space they need and this will also help you to isolate the babes should you wish to.

As I say I’m only a newbie myself I do however make a point of reading as much as I can about the things I’m interested in, so I can fully understand what it is I’m learning about. I don’t mean to sound rude or like I’m talking down to you in anyway I’m just trying to give you the best advise I can offer in the most applicable way, do let me know how you get on and what solutions you find to work for you.

P.S If you haven’t already take a look in the “Beginner Questions†and also the “Livebearers†forums there’s quite a lot of info to be had in various post you’ll find about these forums.

Ok time for me to think about what I’m going to have for dinner, so good luck and do let me know how you get on.

Kind Regards,

Lee

Just found something that may help you out Wendy, try using a "Turkey Baster" to catch your fry in, I’ve never used one but sounds like it will work to me, LET ME KNOW!

Lee!You are hysterical!! A turkey baster!! And you have a beautiful family!! 8)

Thanks for all your great suggestions. And yes, I, too read as much as I can get my hands on about this "fishlife."

Cheers.

Heheh yea a "Turkey Baster" give it ago sounds like a sweet idea to me, steady on the "fishlife" though please its not got that bad for me yet ;-).

Thank you, yes i do have a beautiful family dont i.

I've suggested the use of the Turkey Baster several times before and agree that is the best way to catch fry. I've used it with great success . . . though it's still difficult to chase the fry down in order to suck them up in the baster. :)

Good luck with your fry. Sorry I can't help with the question about the cord type thing coming out of your molly. I've never seen that in my mollies yet. :/

Hi,

Although I'm new to fish keeping (six months) I have seen this 'cord like' object many times & would aggree that it is just poop as I have noticed it with both male & female fish & even with the babies (3-4 weeks old onwards). Also it appears shortly after feeding.

I wonder if it is due to the type of food they eat, mine feed mostly on flake at the moment but having seen the reports of fry growing quicker & all fish apearing to be healther when food includes bloodworm & brine shrimp I'm going to try some.

One of my Platties had 4 babies (well that's how many I found) then another 16 (but I lost 4), a second Platty has had approx. 16 (told them to stay still while I count them but you know what kids are like, never do what they are told :D ) and both appear pregnant again.

i hope the bettas is female, and they need groups of 4+

What you talking about ?
Hi This is about our previous discussion a few weeks back about "embilical cord" versus "poop" in my mollies! I have to say, that after a few weeks of observing my balloon mollie, my 2 dalmation mollies and the little fry, I've come to believe that THIS REALLY IS POOP!! But I've never seen such long ropes and curls of it, day after day, continuously~~It's like a POOP FEST~~!! And before the mollies gave birth a few weeks ago, I never saw any at all..and of course, our dear, animated funny purple betta, I've never seen poop ever--and he's been with us almost a year! (Whew! I'm pooped! ha ha)

Thanks to all who helped with suggestions. We do now have all our little fry in a crib-like net in the tank separating them. The 3 who we couldn't catch--apparently were too fast for the other fish to catch, too, although frankly, they didn't seem that interested in having them for lunch! I managed to scoop them up with a net the other day right after I fed the fry. The 3 free fry were hanging out together right outsid the "crib" and I grabbed 'em! :good:

One sad thing to report re our 2 algae-eating catfish- the other day I found one of them dead, hanging out of the filter by the tail! Looked like he might have gotten his tail caught...Seemed unusual to me because he and his pal often seemed to be curled around the filter, noshing on algae. Well, accidents happen! It was pretty creepy as most of what was left hanging was a shell...

Otherwise, we are happily living with our delightful, friendly fish! Warm fishy wishes to all, Wendy

Spader, female bettas only need to be kept in large groups if you are keeping a sorority tank. They aren't schooling fish. Also males can be just fine in community tanks.
