i just bought a digital thermometer by coral life and it is at 80*F is that to hot ? what would be a good temp? i was uesing a mercury type thermometer and did not feel it was doing a good job saying ware i put it .i tried truning down the heater and it did not seem to do much good .should i have a fan or somethingto keep it cooler?

I prefer a cooler tank at around 76-78 but 80-82 is okay just try to keep it below 82 if you can although things 'should' be okay just over this for a few hours but not much longer

OK so how fast can i lower the temp to a safe spot and not hurt anything?
i bought a new heater witch is the Eheim Jagar and it don't seem to be working rite.
i have the temp on the heater set at 75*F and the tank is at 78*F and the heater is sill coming on so i just unplugged it . the temp is staying at 77*F-78*F with the lights off
and 80*F -81*F with the lights on what do you all think could be causing my temp to be so high all i have for light are the coral life PCs 4 65 watt bulbs . my filters are.
1 Eheim wet/dry canister
1 350 bio wheel
1 250 magnum
1 turbo twist UV .
for my power heads i have
1 900 maxi jet
1 600 maxi jet both with the hydor
wave maker thing on them.
i also have a coral life protein skimmer 100.
all seem to be cool to the touch and none of them are blocked or over working
so if anyone can give me a place to look i would greatly appreciate it.

Well i would first start with the heater for your tank; if it is turning on when the temp is well above the set temp, then the thermometer of your heater may be outta whack a little or all together broken. Try turning the temp setting down and it may work out fine that you just need to set the temp 2 or 3 degrees lower than your desired temp. If it is broken and is staying on all the time then I would just invest in a new heater as it is nto worth saving 20 bucks from buying a new heater to find out one afternoon that your temp is 85 degrees + and your whole tank is in stress with a possibility of death for everything. If your tank is still staying too hot then try raising your lights off the surface of the water a few inches. This will allow somemore circulation of air above the tank and some more heat to dissipate into the surroundings instead of going right into the tank.

On the temp issue too, 78 to 80 is around good. 74-76 is on the colder side while 82+ is too hot and really just not necessary.
