My plants don't really seem to be growing. I couldn't even get java moss to grow at all in about a month. I don't know if that's unreasonable or..?

1.25 WPG and a half cap of Flourish Excel every other day, although I was overdosing 4 times as much up until this last week when I realised.

I don't really know how fast plants grow, so was wondering what everyone else sees in their tank.

How long do you keep you lights on during the day?

16-00 is 8 hours, Also the quadruple over dose of gluturaldehyde, will no doubt have affected the rate at which the Java moss can grow, over dosed Java moss hates the stuff!

Haha, sorry... terrible maths from me there. So should I lower it more or keep it at this? I used to do 6 hours but increased it as I thought this would promote growth.

Yeah I removed the java moss about 2 weeks ago though and keep it in a pot of water on the window sil to see what happens. Nothing yet.

Just wondering, does it make a difference at what time you have the lights on? What is the standard?

my stems are growing about 1.5 inches per week (my rotala used to grow faster)
Hairgrass is spreading rapidly, with new shoots appearing everyday.
My blya is begginging to take with a new leaf forming daily.
In my no ferts, no co2 tank, my anubias are flowering about 2-3 times a month with new leaves every week.
Java moss is expanding slowly, as im controlling it.

its all down to the conditions in your tank.

Light and Excel alone does not grow plants for you. What plants do you have there?

Also, the WPG rule is just a guideline. How large is your aquarium? All plants have a minimum light treshold that must be met. Otherwise the WPG doesn't mean much at all.

80 x 35 x 45cm tank

Pretty standard plants. I also have Tropica sub soil under my gravel.

Vallis at the back. It doesn't really grow past a certain height and instead sort of frays near the top but not necessarily at the tip. The top piece then eventually rots and breaks off. In general the vallis seems to have a very high turn over of leaves. There are plenty of runners and baby plants coming off them but the adult ones don't look that lush. Would the filter power head have anything to do with it? Would the current of the water be causing this, as it doesn't seem to grow past that height. I was hoping I could grow some to float across the top a little in the current.

A couple of amazon swords - some very papery thin, pale leaves. The youngest baby plant has a couple of leaves going a sort of papery brown from the tip down, but not being eroded.

1 anubias nana - Noticed a new shoot of some kind coming up yesterday, after 3-4 weeks. Not worried about this one, as it's quite big already and a nice size.

Java ferns on pieces of bogwood - don't seem to have grown in the slightest, after 2 months.

Cryptos - Growing OK. The most notable of all the plants.

Hygrophilia - Newest plants. Haven't noticed anything in a week.

Vallis doesnt like Excel or any other liquid carbo
Normal dosage is usualy ok but any overdose will be harmfull.
Im dosing easy carbo to my tank where I have Vallis rubra and Vallis Torta and while it nicely accelerated growth of all other plants vallis starts to show that it doesnt like it  especialy Torta where growth slowed down and im geting yellow leaves without any visible damage. Atm im trying to balance dosage of liquid carbo according to vallis condition :)

Other plants tend to grow in couple of inches weekly with Hygrophila polysperma able to grow +6" weekly, amazon sword "motherplant" (+25" diameter) able to produce 1-2 leaves 7" long and 2" wide every week.
Hygrophila difformis - another fast growing plant - left alone with lots of space will grow like mad
Ceratopteris - Grows as fast as Hygrophila difformis

but they are getting 2x official dose of liquid carbo daily (10ml in 240l tank), liquid fertilizer + extra Iron, not too mention 12h of 2,4 WPG of light

Previously under 1,5WPG, Tetra liquid Fert every 2 weeks, no liquid i had about half of current growth, heavier growth of vallis and bit of problems with smaller foregroud plants due to them beeing overshadowed by high growth ones

I would perhaps consider another form of CO2 injection. Vallis doesn't mind regular CO2 injection, it just gets twitchy with the easycarbo and excel stuff. Other plants do so as well. I almost killed my A. reineckii because I was overdosing to kill BBA on one leaf. It would have been better to remove the offending leaf.

Hold my hand, I hate doing math, how large is your tank in gallons?

My plants will double its size in 2 weeks with no co2 or chemicals added, just put the plants in.
