Well peeps, the breeder 14g tank is set up for real attempts at breeding cories..any cories! It is with fine sand, a fluval 2 plus (most likely adding a separate filter tomorrow to help with filtration) and plenty of live plants with java moss to follow.

I have coming, a breeding group pf 6 bronze cories and....some black aeneus, I happened to come across some to my immense surprise and paid a little extra this month so though why not? The bronze cories will be arriving a week tomorrow all fingers crossed, and the black aeneus two weeks time.

The tank is setup now and running with some fish in to keep the filter nice and mature. I was thinking as at least a week or two before these arrive, shall I give my caudimaculatus a go? They breed so readily and there is a lot of activity at the moment but the rest of the community always get to the eggs before I do. First shall I give a go? Second how on earth do I catch them? Go for it and hope for the best and try not to overstress them too much? And thirdly, if was to do this the plan would be to get most of the tank with their original tank water and acclimatise just in case - good to go?

Lastly, how readily do black aeneus breed? Are they like the bronze, albinos and peppered or a different league?

Thanks everyone, really excited and really hope to give raising a real proper go x

Ooo good luck with the eminent new additions :)

It would be good to see if the cauds would breed again given their own space and less likely for hungry mouths to eat the eggs, catching corys or any fish is my downfall  ,although you could try the 2 net method or wait till feeding time, then while they're distracted with food to try and catch them.

I would use some of their tank water when transferring, although acclimatising them has well is a good thing...

I haven't breed black aeneus cories, but i would have thought given the right conditions, they would breed just has well has their same species family of bronze, albino, gold & green :)

the best of luck with your project, sounding great :good:
when catching fish i find that its less stressfull to you and the fish if the water level in the tank is lowered as low as possible. this gives them less room to escape and makes catching them alot easier.
black aeneus are actually schwartzei but commonly labelled wrong, cant help with these as i never got round to buying any but they are cracking fish.
i would use water from the current tank in the new breeder tank just to settle the corys in better :good:

Thanks so much guys, will get onto water changes and set up the 14g breeder by tonight, and then give a go with the caudimaculatus :good: Thanks for the great tips xxx

Hi lilacamy931 :)

We'll have to wait and see a picture of your new fish to be sure, but I suspect you might be getting black C. schultzei. They were formerly called a black variation of C. aeneus before their name was officially changed. Here's my old breeding thread about them.

I hope this is what you are getting. They are even more beautiful in the tank than in the pictures. I'm sure you will love them.

Hello Inchworm, those are the ones that I think are coming :hyper: Thanks for the proper name term as was getting very confused with aeneus and venezulan etc. Wow thanks so much for the thread, read the first page but off to work in mo but the babies you got from them are gorgeous! Yours are absolutely stunning  I tried to move the caudimaculatus into the breeder but they were too hard to catch and after 5 minutes decided to leave them in paradise  A week tomorrow and hope to have some yummy pics of cories like yours. Reading that first page they seemed easily bred?

EDIT: found some time to read through that amazing post, thanks so much Inchworm, the growing piccys are absolutely amazing!

sorry amy i meant schultzei not schwartzei..... not sure where that came from!

I will hopefully have lot's of juvi hi-fin bronze up for grabs soon (if they survive, which they seem to be doing pretty well).
They are basically bronze corys with elongated fins. They bred within the first 2 days of having them.

P.S. Sorry to hijak.
