My BN pleco (I believe) has been rescaping my sand topography recently! lol Little #28### keeps changing the way my sand is sloped to suit HIM! He actually seems to think that he has some say in the matter... Actually he does, since he changes the sand and I just leave it until I do a water change at the end of the week.
My sand has the bits that you talk about, but they aren't in the spot that's nearly as visible as you are talking about. Mine mostly builds up in one spot. I have to clean it up regularly, but my tank is cleaner because the poo is removed, not hiding. ;-)
