I wish i could answer this, and i wish i knew.
Do white bettas (females) even show stress/spwaning bars? -_-

I know, i am just asking a general question, i said white bettas then (females) in case there are any others that have the same question.
 
Females that cannot show vertical bars for spawning have to rely on the head down position to show the male they are willing. I'm assuming this applies to horizontal stress stripes also, so you'll have to watch for other signs of stress such as clamped fins, heavy breathing, or lethargy.
 
Losing color is the first sign. If you notice, when you see horizontal stess lines, the fish has lost a good deal of the color in his body.
