Just wondering how you all pronounce Sterbai (Cory)...

I went into my LFS and asked for a couple more of the Sterbai Corys - and I pronounced it as STIR-BYE - but the manageress didn't seem to understand me. I said it a few times - in the end i just pointed to the tank they were in and she said oh the STIR-BIRS...

So am I pronouncing it incorrectly? Just don't want to make a fool of myself next time LOL

I thought your original pronounciation was right "stir-bye", thats what the LFS at mine called it.

Stir-Bye , or Stirb-eye is the correct pronounciation. Anything with ai on the end , you pronounce the ai as you would with the word eye

Thanks all! Some interesting replies there, LOL

A couple of you agree that I got it right and Honeythorn's explanation fits with the reason I pronounced it that way. So, wow, I probably had it right - great, I can continue saying "Stir bye" then without feeling a right ninny!

Cheers - Athena

Scientific Name Corydoras sterbai Knaack, 1962 - add this species to your "My Cats" page.
Common Name(s) Sterba's Cory
Type Locality Rio Guaporé, Brazil.
Pronunciation Kory DOOR ###### - ster bye
Etymology Cory = helmet, doras = skin. In this case it was incorrectly used to mean armour (cuirasse) instead of skin in allusion to the dual rows of plates that run along the flanks of this genus. Specifically named in honour of Dr. Günther Sterba.

Honeythorn is absolutely right =)
I wonder if the woman thought the ending was more like bah/ber?
