Betta is pronounced Bet-a
Beta is pronounced Bay-ta
You can get this from looking at the scientific name Betta splenden Since most scientific names are Latin the pronounciation (sp?) is usually not as variable as it is in English.

LOL!!!

...I'm glad this question was asked. I've always said ''Bay-ta''...but, this woman in my lfs said ''Bet-ta'' and I was thinking, ''What's up with the way she's pronouncing its name?"

:D  :D

Now I know.

actually, Kissifish, it's 'Beh-tuh'. the equivalent of the Greek letter 'B' is Beta, pronounced 'Bay-tuh', the extra 'T' in 'Betta' is they so people do not mistake it for the Greek letter 'Beta'.

I pronounce it Betta (as in better) but lots of the shops look at me strangely and say, "oh you mean a beat-er?!"

I think that beat-er sounds cruel...also, being from the north, everything has short vowels, like Bath not barth and grass not grarss

maybe beat-er is the english equivalent of bay-ta...?

I htink that beat-er sounds like beat-her and thats just nasty....Huey will stay a betta (better) I'm afraid...

interesting thread tho, I was wondering the same the other day but thought you lot would think I was strange if I didn't know how to pronounce it! ;) he he

Well being from Texas where we add extra vowels to all words I guess it would have to be Baayy Ta...make sure you pronounce this with a slow draaaaawwwl

he he he!!

[tries it]

nope all I got was a northerner thats a bit drunk, but thats probably my ability with accents..! ;)
