How do you grow plants and moss balls, like in a LFS without any fish in the tank?

Do you have to add lots of additives etc? do you need a filter or just a pump to circulate the water?

Cheers

Most fish stores I've seen aren't so much "growing" plants as "keeping plants alive". As long as they have CO2, light, and fertilizer... that's all they really need.

And for many plants the CO2 and nutrients that are already available without any special effort are sufficient. Once you have the lighting many plants are much easier than fish. In my opinion the hard part is making sure the algae doesn't have a party with your new stronger lighting.

i have some living in an unfiltered unheated glass jar....there are some pest snails in there and that's it :dunno: they've only been there about three months, but they've grown a lot.

You can successfully grow plants without any fish. Depending on the setup you may have to add nitrates to the tank. Some people, myself included, already do this in a tank with fish.

The plants won't need a filter, and a pump will suffice for water circulation. The pump may become clogged without some form of filtration though.

My 20 gallon was planted long before I added fish to it. The plants loved the additional CO2 that I was able to give them in a fishless tank. :hey:

Thanks for the info peeps, that sounds alot simpler than I thought.

What is the best thing to keep the alga at bay?
