Hi! I have a 10 gallon baby tank with guppies in it (all babies) but it seems that when thay start to get bigger (3\4 inch or so) They get sick or something and don't make it. How do you keep them from dying? My tank is well cycled (no ammonia no nitrites .5 nitrates, ph 7.6) I do bi weekly water changes about 25% or so. They eat crushed flakes, live brine shrimp (when I have it) and I just bought some Hikari Tropics First Bites to see if that is better for them. I have a hang behind filter. What am I missing? I have just one fry left that is about 3\4 inch long the rest are very little babies (about two weeks old or so) but the bigger one is now showing signs of illness. Tail fin went from a nice fan to a sudden pointed shape and her back end is starting to look a little deformed. I have only had two fish make it to "graduate" into the big tank and I have had lots of fry! The other fry in the tank show no signs of distress at all and all are still eating and swimming fine (including the big one) What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

What kind of heater do you have? Have you test your water source? On first guess, it sounds like you're doing things right. It could be overfeeding. How often are you feeding?

how old are the female guppies? the moms? it could be that they are too old to give birth to healty young, and are past their prime. there for they give birth to weak fragile fry that usualy dont make it.

sounds like you defo over feeding its better to under feed cos overfeeding causes the food to rot and harmful to fish resulting in harmfull bacteria forming and killing the fry as there imune system aint fully developed

cheers dane

I can't see that you are doing anything wrong. At the end of the day you cannot expect all of the guppy fry to survive into adulthood but to lose them all seems very strange.

I had a guppy give birth to around 30 fry in my nursery tank a few months ago. I now have 17 that have survived and they are almost big enough to go in my main tank. I have a couple of large angels and even larger silver dollars so I need to ensure they are definately big enough.

It could be one of the reasons that others have suggested but from what you have said you are doing everything right.

Thanks guys! I have a submersable heater set at 78 degrees F. They are only fed in the morning and at night. I am careful not to feed too much because I learned my lesson with all those little white worms a while back. I understand not all of them will make it but I have only had two of them make it to adulthood out of many batches. I'm not sure how old the moms are, they were adults when I got them so it's hard to tell. I have had them maybe three to five months. (Whay is their life expectancy?) Thanks for telling me you think I'm doing it right, I just don't know what else I can do. Today the sick one looks better. Her tail fin isn't as tightly clamped. She may make it after all. I think the water change I did helped too. Thanks again!!
