"How" do you fill up your aquarium?

Same as JustinSane, surprise :D
But I have a circulation pump to speed up the first part.

I don't know what python is either. Is it some kind of vacuum cleaner?

I'm still setting up my tank (about to start fishless cylcle in a few days)...

Here's a question that's been puzzling me-- When you have your fish in, and you need to do a water change, will pouring in dechlorinated tap water not be harmful to the fish? In terms of temperature.

I only have one heater, so I can't heat the new water before pouring into the tank. Or will it not matter due to the ratio of heated water to new water? :S

Emo, you balance the cold and warm water and using a thermometer, get the temperature right, then close the pump valve and let it flow in. My fish sometimes swim in the current of the incoming chlorinated water and nothing ever happens :D

FYI people, a python is a long hose with a ball valve at the end beside the gravel vac tube, at the start of the long hose is a pump that screws into your tap. When you open it the tap water passing through creates a suction, and when you close it flows through the tube. Hope you get it, if not go to their website :dunno:

i use a bukect for 180 g it takes a while and i make a HUGE mess but then again i only have the one tank and it's quite close to the sink so it's not a huge hassle .. only taking the water out is a bit of a hassle that involves two people running back and forth pouring the water out when the bucket gets full using a gravel vac,

i gotta start using a better system

Hi all, im new to the site and this is my first post. I live in UK and began keeping fish only 6 months ago. I too got tired or running in and out with a little bucket chaging the water in my 190 litre tank, so now this isi what i do...

i bought a 50 litre bucket ( big and very heavy!!) use a gravel cleaner and empty required amount into bucket, (i bought 50 litre bucket so it would be large enough for all water change % requirements.

Then from an external tap i fill up to the required amount and add water conditioner. A spare heater is placed in the bucket (covered in its protective cage and away from the plastic.

I then use a pond pump which is submersible and drop it into the tank. Of course a hosepipe runs the water back to the tank. Tthe pump will pump 2000 litres an hours. However as it is required to lift approx 1.5 meters, it loses some of its efficiency (which is better as thye return flow is calm and does not disturb the water. i place the hose underwater in any event.

My tank is a corner unit and near to a large window, i placed it there for this reason alone, that way i can use such a large bucket as i dont have to move it anywhere and the pump doesnt struggle as the hose only needs to be 3 meters long.

Hope that helps.

By the way, whats a python?, do they have a web site???.

Regards

I just have a 20 gallon so i use a bucket
but since I have to "temporarily" store the aquarium on a higher shelf, i can't pour from the bucket in the aquarium without hitting the ceiling....

I saw a nice stand for around 100$ at a pet store the other day. It was fitted for my aquarium and had nice storage underneath. Then I'll just use a bucket

lol :p

syphon out whilst gravel cleaning intoa bucket, only about 5 litre one(looking for a 5 gallon drum instead) then I chucka rope out my upstairs window tie it to the hose outside and pull the hose into my room!! then turn the tap on holding my hand over the water flow so it doesn't disturb everything.

for my rekord 70 i bail the water back in from a bucket with a tub, since i only need to do about 1 bucket on this i don't mind.

when i get my 850litre tand set up i'll be paling it out as normal and using the hose, since it's on the gorund floor and window leads to the back garden it will be quite easy. i might find a way to pump the old water directly outside.

To drain I ran some plumbing in my basement that comes tru the floor into the base cabinet of my built in stand. This drains directly into the laundry sink. When cleaning my tank (all on first floor) I just connect my hose to the connection in the cabinet and siphon the water from the tanks.

To fill, I use a 35 gallon rubbermaid garbage can (never been used for garbage). I fill it up in the kitchen and add my dechlor and my BS for buffer. Since the garbage can has wheels on it I just wheel it in by the tanks and pump the water from the garbage can to the desired tank.

I am currently in the process of setting up two 150 gallon rubbermaid stock tanks in the basement for pretreating water and will be pump to the desired tank upstaris from there.

wow i must be plain simple!!! :D

in my downstairs 10gal i use two 2litre jugs which takes me about 4 trips from the tank to the sink... and then 4 trips from the sink... to the tank lol// :) :D :p

my 5gals easier though, i still use the two 2 litre jugs but i simple put the water outta my window, and it runs down the shed roof and into the gutter and on the floor. they takes me like 4-5 jugs and like 4 steps lol... :p :D but then i have to make the trips downstairs and up to refill it  its hard lol... joke
