how do you clone filter media stuff?

You cut half of the mature media off, then with you new filter media you cut half of that off aswell and swap it round. So in each filter you have half new media and half old media.
does that make sense?

I usually do a clone the easy way. I set up the new tank, dechlor the water, get the filter running and clean my old filter in the new tank. Once the cloudiness is gone,I either stock with a few fish or use ammonia to check how well I have cloned it. I often can go to full stocking within a week of starting a tank this way.
