How do I start my eheim 2215?

I suck on the pipe and water comes out, some of it is spilt and some goes into the filter but it doesnt start sucking, the water goes back down into the tank

sucking on the return pipe should prime the canister, once this is happening then rebuild the spraybar onto the pipe and job done. do you have the flow taps in line? if so are they open?
this is the bad part about these filters although once primed and running if you have the taps it will prime itself once connected and the flow is turned back on, unless you remove the pipes for cleaning that is.
if it sounds funny when running then its full of trapped air. keep it running and tilt it either side to release the air

Its all sorted now thanks, I had the tubes the wrong way around and was sucking on the wrong one.
