well guys i want to plant a few plants in my aquarium i currently have a gravel substrate i was thinking of that i will tie the roots of the plans to some og the gravel until it holds on and starts to grow well i have a discus tank now so i don't think there will be any uprooting or anything for as much i know they don't do that [might be wrong as i'm new to discus as well in which case i'll be happy to be corrected]

i know tha many ppl reccomend sand as the substrate but i've even eard cases where the plans die in sand or the roots rot and release harmful gases in the tank is that true

i'm having a though time deciding please help

thank you :D

There are a few plants which do best in sand, but generally there is little difference between sand and gravel.

For planting, the best thing to do is just bury the plants deep (1-2 inches) and be careful not to pull them up. Generally, only plants such as Anubias, Java ferns and mosses need to be tied to something as they can not be buried under the gravel (easily, without harming the plants).

The only reason I can think of roots rotting is because you've planted them too deep in the substrate. As for the sand and toxic gases thing, All you need to do to avoid it is to stir the sand a little now and then. Like once every time you do a water change.
