How Can I...

Live is better as your fish will nibble on them. Something like watersprite or ambulia looks nice and the fish love it. Your fish don't move around alot probably because they feel insecure, adding some live plants will definately improve things for them, adding a background will also help. Also feed them some fresh veg' a couple of times a week.

like i said.. my fish are very very active and i only have artificial plants sooo...

today i went out back and picked a up a few rocks (slate and granite) and boiled them and put them in the tank
so far the fish seem to like the rocks

i'll make a small cave type rock structure tomorrow with a few more rocks so they have someplace to hide

No plants? ????

im adding plants in a few days

do far the fish love the new rocks, i also added a very small bit of baking soda to bring the ph up a little and now they are much more active
the ph before was around 6 but now its around 6.7(i added a tiny bit more this morning)

Not a good idea to mess with your ph, fish can adapt to lower or higher ph than their "ideal" level. Fluctuating ph levels are more stressful to your fish than just leaving them alone.

If you're determined to change it though, use a small amount of crushed coral in your filter instead of the baking soda, this will up it nice and slowly and you wont have to remember to add the same amount of baking soda every time you do a water change. You'll need to do ph tests regularly though to make sure it stays stable.

i had to do something about the ph because when i tested the ph the water in the test tube was almost an orange looking color probably around a 5
and i didnt add the baking soda all at once, i just added a very tiny bit into a corner of the tank that has the least amount of circulation
and i waited a few hours before adding more i probably added baking soda like 3 times in like 48hours

when i posted the above post it was about 3 hours after i added my last dose
so it wasnt a very high ph swing but it did seem to help the fish a lot

where would one get some crushed coral from? i think i may try that once the baking soda effect starts to wear off

Try calling a LFS that sells marine fish, they're sure to have it.

homedepot is having sale on playsand this week and i was in that area so i picked up a 50lb bag
i plan on washing it tomorrow and have it in the tank by afternoon

would it be safe to put the fish in the tank right after i put in the washed sand? or should i wait a few hours?
i also talked to the manager at the local petco and she said they will be getting a new shipment of plants on wednesday so i'll go buy some plants sometime wednesday

quick question- would regular school glue be safe to put inside a freshwater tank? i have this great idea for a small plastic cave and want to cover the outside in glue and pour some sand over it so you cant see the plastic and the sand would stay in place covering the entire outside surface of the cave

if its not safe then what type of glue would be safe for inside a tank besides silicone because i hate the smell of wet silicone sealant
