How Can I Up My Ph A Little ?

I have a Tanganyika tank setup now i know my tank needs to have a pH 7.8-9.0 but its around 7.4 give or take i have ocean rock in there that upped it a little bit but i want to get it around 8 i was gonna buy crushed coral but it wont go in my filter and i dont fancy tipping it over my sand substrate

Whilst they may prefer a higher ph, playing around with it isnt a good idea, as this can cause fluctuation in the ph which is bad for the fish, if they are doing well on the ph that you have, I would leave it alone, as keeping it stable is better for them then having it go up and down all the time as you try to keep it stable.

Ok minx ill just leave it my LFS kept them in a PH of 7.2 they told my why they kept it that low there was a reason for it but i forgot why anyway ye my fish seem happy so do you think they will be fine ?

I personally know absolutely ZERO about tang cichlids, but if they are used to that ph then Im sure they will be fine. But those that know more about them may have a better idea, so if Im wrong, I apologise in advance

Dont worry about it minx you properly know a lot more than me though there well looked after i don't just throw them in there with no knowledge what so ever lol

Maybe put a post up in the African cichlid section and just get confirmation from the guys in there.

I think lake tang~ has the highest pH out of all the rift lakes (malawi/victoria/tanganyika). Have you already got the fish? If not I would be tempted to try and raise the pH to around 8 using crushed coral (I know you said you didn't want to use it but you could put it in your sand and mix it in). Then moniter the pH over time to see if there are any swings.

Having said that a pH of 7.4 should be fine if they are tank bred fish, so if you don't want to mess around I wouldn't.

The mineral content of the lake is extremely high. It is so high that it precipitates and forms underwater flows that coat the rocks. The lake has been measured at pH values above 9.0. If the water in your aquarium is above 7.0, this will be satisfactory.
