How Can I Keep A Tropical Sand Aquarium Clean?

Every day it gets so dirty and i clean it once a week but yet that isnt enough. It gets dirty everyday is there something that i can do to keep it clean?? Thax for any help!!!

Hiya,

I have the same problem and have been told that getting snails helps!! they hoover up the gunge without hurting your plants. There is a lady on the buy/sell page who is offering some for free.

when I had sand I had two internal filters, one at the bottom on one end, the other upside on the bottom with a spray bar. This pushes the gunk (in theory) to the other end to be picked up by the other one (this was a 3' tank). Cories and plants also help as they kick up the yuk to settle round the plants bottoms which also works to some degree as fertiliser. HTH

Get you filter(filters) set up so that they surculate the water in the tank, that way the dirt will end up being sucked up by the filter.

Corry's do help also.
If you have a small tank then get panda corry's, they stay small.

Other alternatives are corry sterbi,corry julie.

Another alternative is singapore fan shrimp, they crawl around on the sand eating everything. The only drawback with them is that they poop little pellits. Not as bad as the dirt you already have but still a bit obviouse on the sand. A good surculation of water takes care of that also.

The main thing is to get your filter set up right for a good surculation of water.

Had the same problem when i switched to sand.

A couple of bambooshrimps and a pair of rams did the job for me.

The shripms east most the crap and the rams take mouth fulls of sand with the crap and food then spit it back out all crushed up so the bits just floats away with the current

Get your hands wet and run your fingers through the sand, and hey presto the filters will take it up.

Thax guys for all your reply's i think i will have to go with the internal filter seeing how i have 2 penguin 400 running and it's still dirty and also have tons of babies i had never been able to keep babies alive i am so happy!!! Thax again guys for your replies and i will try each one to see which one works best for me. Thax again!!!
