I clearly did not say slurpee cups were expensive. But buying in the ranges of maybe say 50 at 1.50 a slurpee. Will not be so cheap :flex:

whoever said spawning Bettas was cheap? LOL.. just for a 12gal spawning tank, I spent $80. Then, I have to get a much larger (more bare, so it'll probably be around $50) grow-out tank, food and cultures, and a bunch of plants. You can actually order Beanie boxes in bulk for around $2 each (if you order 50+). Betta breeding is definitely rewarding and an awesome experience, but as tons of people say here everyday, NOT cheap or easy!!

I'll most likely be using 1-4 gallon tupperware type containers (like Synirrs) from WM or Costco. They cost $2-5 each, which is completely worth it ~_~.. I'm just hoping I might cut even - even though I probably wont. If I get several HM's and nice colors, I *might* get back most of what I'm spending.

Darn product markups :sly:

Fortunately, it should be possible to avoid that. You should be able to find similar-sized plastic cups sold in large packages in whatever section of WalMart sells picnic and/or party supplies (or just look for the styrofoam cups and the plastic ones should be nearby). That, or look for packages of plastic beer cups- they're huge, and should be plenty big enough for fry, plus a lot cheaper than buying a slurpee for each fry! Just don't buy any cups that are lined with wax or other waterproofing material, because it could leech into the water and damage your fry.

yes, exactly, any of those would do as well :)

Yeevia was using them long before me, so I think he deserves the credit :p

Just came across this, Brooke, while hunting for jarring solutions for my own (prospective) fry. You may be interested in this too, if you're still hunting for cups. Apparently this company sells clear plastic drink cups in bulk, and I think that it works out to less than a dollar per cup. You can also buy lids to go with them, and they come in up to 32 oz sizes. Check out the 'existing products' section.

ETA: this is the sizing 'brochure' for their clear cups

I did see those, thanks  I think the site where I first saw the Fabri-Kal ones listed them as just a smidgen cheaper, but at least with the juvie betta cups you have the advantage of ordering fewer than 300, if you so choose

Hmm, Fabri-Kal offers the option of requesting a sample of the cup . . . maybe I could get a sample of both types of cup and compare them. Can't be too careful with my beebees! :p

haha i know...i've yet to decide what to get. i know i'm being all picky and stuff, but it's my first time. i'm sure eventually i'll be stickin em in slurpee cups!

I've now decided to use 2l soda bottles with the top cut off. Easy and quick to clean, can easily have lids put on if need be, cheap (we get through lots of drinks but you can buy cheap bottles of extra value cola or something for cheap), enough room. Don't tip over easily either.

Ooh, that really is a neat idea. I wish Prince Edward Island sold pop in plastic bottles :( All you can get are glass bottles.

For future reference, though, how are you making the lids? It sounds like a really great recycling project, too!

The Fabri-Kal are a bit on the opaque side, I was a bit disappointed with them.

Check your local restraunt supply. I have found perfectly clear 32 ounce containers for a 1.50 for 50 of them. Way cheaper than what I paid at Fabri-Kal.

Wow, that's fabulous- I'll definitely look into that, then

Oh- which cups did you get from Fabri-Kal? They offer two kinds, and the one they call translucent is apparently not their "crystal clear" one, but it's the cheaper one . . . took me some reading to figure that out

If I can avoid paying that much, though, I'll definitely go around to supply stores when I get back to Charlottetown- that's wonderfully cheap!

Not 100% sure, either putting the lid on upside down with straws stuck on to stop it sliding in, or cardboard, or whatever. I did a bit of looking today, you can buy bottles of extra value cola from Tesco for 18p, lemonade for 17p or water for 18p. I'm sure you can find them cheaper though. I've got Hannibal in one at the moment, I'll take a picture later.

Here we go. Don't forget he's a full grown VT with big fins. And normally the plant and gravel wouldn't be in there. Oops, a tad big :*)
